Saysamone Amphonesinh

Portrait

CEO, artist, writer, poet and songwriter, Saysamone Amphonesinh is also a keen musician and botanist.

He was born on 12th May 1944 in Pakse, Laos, but to understand the course that his life has taken, we must follow a route that starts in southern China and goes the whole length of the Mekong, that large, fertile river that crosses several countries encouraging people to intermingle: Chinese, Thai, Burmese, Vietnamese, Lao and Khmer among others.

The son of a prominent merchant of Chinese origin and a Lao mother, also of Chinese origin, he grew up in a large family that in 1950 already had its own private aeroplanes, a rarity in the Laos of those days and still an exception today.

In 1968, he married Nguyên thi Minh Hoi, a woman of Vietnamese origin also born in Pakse. They have four children, two boys and two girls: Dominique, Michel, Ammala and Annie.

Childhood and Education

While Indochina was still a French colony, Saysamone spent time with young Laotians of his own age and learned Lao, French and catechism at Sainte-Jeanne-Antide School in Pakse, run by the Sisters of Charity and the Jesuits. The death of his father, killed at an early age in an accident, forced the young Saysamone to take on the heavy responsibilities incumbent on an eldest son: to fund his own needs and also to take some of the pressure off his mother and to help her raise his younger brothers and sisters, he left school and had many casual jobs, sometimes working in the evening—as a cigarette seller in the street, an apprentice electrician, a cinema projectionist—and studying during the day.

Some years later, he went back to school to study Chinese, this time for economic and practical reasons—the school building was directly opposite his house. In the event, he regularly attended the lessons on Buddhism given by the monks from the pagoda in his neighbourhood. Afterwards, he returned to Sainte-Jeanne-Antide School in Pakse to resume his French lessons, before entering the high school in Pakse two years later. He learnt English and passages from the New Testament with Protestant pastors in the evenings. Later, he attended law school in Montpellier while working part time.

Enriched by these different cultures, born of several different religions and languages, he has had a good stock of spiritual and social knowledge since his childhood. He speaks six languages: Lao, French, English, Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai.

Manager and Entrepreneur

Saysamone Amphonesinh inherited a head for business and management from his father. Although he had never had any formal commercial training, his dream was to set up his own business. In Laos, he held management positions in oil companies such as Caltex and Shell. After the fall of the monarchy in Laos, he and his family emigrated and settled in France. Naturally, being an immigrant meant that he could not immediately find a similar job to the one that he had had in his own country, so to feed his family of four children, he once more had to go through the trials and tribulations of making ends meet with casual work.

He finally managed to get a job with a large American multinational based in the Paris region, and here he perfected his English and garnered a great deal of international marketing and business management experience. Throughout his professional life, he constantly strove to develop himself and thereby increase the range of his abilities and experience in management, problem analysis and international business management.

By 1987 he already had a professional career studded with promotion after promotion; however, in spite of finding his job interesting and earning a very comfortable salary, he decided to step down after facing several economic and oil crises. He and his family moved once more to Montpellier, where he set up his own business selling office supplies. He later expanded his business activity to include PC sales and assembly. He also set up his own network of retailers in the Midi, where his business became the undisputed leader in the field; then he became a wholesaler and started distributing computer hardware throughout the whole of France.

This accomplished self-made man does not rely on luck: for him, success is the fruit of hard work, and hard work alone. In the same period, he set up other businesses, a gourmet restaurant and expanded his principal company creating new subsidiaries, including a joint venture employing 130 people in China producing bath soap.

Prizes and Awards

In 2005, Le Figaro Économie awarded SAB International, Saysamone Amphonesinh’s company, the title of Best Performing Business in Languedoc-Roussillon, thus saluting the dynamism of an undeniably successful company with sales that continue to grow spectacularly.

He has also received recognition from other publications, such as Master Letter M, which declared him the winner in its prize list of the best businesses in Languedoc-Roussillon.

Career Change

In 2004, at the peak of his activity and success, he decided to retire gradually so that he could take care of his wife, who had become blind, and his own health (he suffered a heart attack in 2002). He entrusted the running of his businesses to his children, who he had been preparing and training over several years. In 2005, he left business completely and oversaw the upkeep of the large house that he bought in Saint-Jean-de-Védas. In this idyllic setting, he tended his garden, devoted himself to reading and started to write poems.

A Passion for Frangipani

To illustrate the cover of his books, our poet from Montpellier wanted to share his passion for flowers and plants, so he chose a frangipani flower, a tropical plant that he considers to be the jewel of his garden and that is also the symbol of his native land, Laos. He has, moreover, devoted several songs to it, where he lyrically exalts the beauty of its blossom and its enchanting scent. He has also set up a website on the subject where, as a keen botanist, he offers his advice to visitors from the four corners of the earth.

A Distinct Preference for Poetry

In the beginning, Saysamone Amphonesinh had no particular artistic or literary pretensions: his sole motivation was the simple pleasure of writing. But the more he wrote, the more he wanted to write, and over the years, writing poems became what kept him going. For three years, he was content with publishing his texts online, hoping first and foremost to reach fellow Laotians. However, he quickly realised that very few of his former compatriots felt an affinity for French literature, but his work did receive a very favourable and encouraging welcome from the French public.

A Music Lover

Being a music lover, Saysamone Amphonesinh decided to set his poems to music, with the help of composer Olivier Strauch and a team of musicians. His songs immediately enchanted young performers, among them the talented Céline Chabert, who has recorded a large number of his texts and plans to include them in her stage repertoire soon.

A Staunch Defender of the French Language

In addition, the Thai Association of French Teachers also showed great interest in his work and asked him for permission to let it be studied in the high schools and universities of the country; this the poet, naturally, was quick to grant. He has given priority to schools since his first collection was published, sending teachers 1,100 copies of Couleur Mékong volume 1, published in September 2009, to help Thai school children to discover the language of Molière and to pay tribute to the country that welcomed him and his family. At the beginning of 2010, more than 400 copies of this work had also been distributed for free to francophone schools in Laos.

Similarly, 1,000 copies of Couleur Mékong volume 2, published at the end of 2010, were given to high schools and universities in Thailand, 400 to Laos and, in a new development compared to Volume 1, 400 to Cambodia and 600 to Vietnam. Saysamone Amphonesinh also sent copies of this second volume to several branches of the Alliance française, namely, Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai.

This policy of donations was repeated at the beginning of 2012: Saysamone sent Volume 3 of Couleur Mékong to Thai high schools, the embassy of Laos and, once again, to various branches of the Alliance française.

Enthusiastic Reactions

These various initiatives to promote the French language have earned Saysamone Amphonesinh enthusiastic, sometimes even ecstatic, reactions in his country of origin and in his adopted homeland, as well as in other countries in Southeast Asia. “Your donation to the schools of Thailand is an important contribution to the maintenance and the promotion of the French language in the region,” emphasises His Excellency Khamliène Nhouyvanisvong, Ambassador of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to UNESCO.

Chongkonn Supavej, visiting professor at Silpakorn University International College (SUIC) and advisor to the Ministry of Education of the Royal Thai Government, also hails Saysamone’s actions. We can imagine that this teacher’s testimony touched the poet’s heart and reassured him that he was on the right track: “You are a literary and business genius,” she declares. “Your poems are good for people learning French. The collection is well liked by the French and by Thai teachers in Thailand. Everyone can see that the author is a genius, full of inspiration and nostalgia. Thank you for your contribution to learning French in Thailand and thank you for having helped us to develop French in this country.”

Thida Boontharm, Vice-President of the Thai Association of French Teachers (ATPF): “On behalf of the Thai Association of French Teachers, I would like to thank you kindly for your gift of the collection of poems and songs Couleur Mékong volume 3. You have put your heart into reflecting an Asian culture, and this collection will effectively serve as a bridge joining Eastern and Western cultures. As with the preceding collections, the ATPF will distribute and promote them among schools, pupils and students in francophone areas…”

His Excellency Yong Chanthalangsy, Ambassador of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to the Swiss Confederation and Permanent Representative of the Lao PDR to the UN in Geneva: “What a man and what romanticism! I have the privilege to have received and perused two of his collections of poems, given to me by the author himself. I can only bow down before such a work and before a man of quality, Lao moreover. A Southern Laotian! I have to say that the south of Laos has provided the country with many talents such as Sisana Sisane, Nai Khou Thongdy Sounthonevichith etc… Once more, well done to Saysamone Amphonesinh, for whom I have much admiration.”

He wrote to Saysamone Amphonesinh at the beginning of 2012, “I have much admiration for you, for your sensitivity, your love of your country and your southern region, all of which move us profoundly. You are right, culture does not pay, and no one has ever seen an artist from Laos become rich from the sales of his works. I am thinking of Khamphou Thavivanh and Khamteum Sanoubane among so many others… But our consolation is that their names are inscribed in the history, and in the cultural and artistic heritage of Laos. I salute your desire to make your mark in our culture and to bequeath the entirety of your creation to the coming generation. I shall see to it that people find out about your works, as far as I am able.”

In France itself, the welcome has not been any less warm, or frankly lyrical, as these few words, signed by a friend, poet and litterateur Koupranom Abhay, can attest: “I have a fair number of true friends, but you, you have a special place in my heart and you are also an extraordinary, incredible man, a man of talent, and full of compassion as well. Only superlatives are suitable to describe you. I am happy and proud to know you.”

Koupranom Abhay wrote to Yong Chanthalangsy: “Dear Friend, you did well to rank Saysamone Amphonesinh among the great artists and writers of Laos, just like Dr Thongdy Sounthonevichith, to whom we owe the music of the National Anthem. He is exceptional […] It is very rare to meet such a talented poet writing in French, and even, simply put, to meet such a great poet.”

Nor do other friends hide their admiration for the work that he has done. After noting the author’s literary qualities, Princess Chao Pangkham Nokham Ditthavong, grande dame of Lao song in Paris, goes on to emphasise the pedagogical importance of Saysamone’s gesture towards his countrymen: “I congratulate you on the courage that you have shown in writing your poems and songs. To tell the truth, you are very good. You write very well, you choose your words carefully, you have your own style… You deserve credit for doing what you have done, something that so many others have not managed to do. You can be proud of yourself. Your poems, your writings and your website make people happy and educate them. It is a nice present that you have given us, and you have put your whole heart into it.”

Pierre Vaulot, Secretary of the European Committee of the Axa Group: “A huge thank you for your collections of poetry, which are read by many students in Chambéry—girls for the most part. Your songs are odes to love. They are a reflection of how refined your heart is and a testimony to your generosity of spirit.”

Touxoua Lyfoung, a well-known Lao figure and a representative of the Hmong in France: “Thankfully there are men like you to safeguard and perpetuate the most beautiful and precious things that the Lao people has, what it carries in its body and in its soul. Your artistic and cultural work will remain a monument for Laos, a point of reference for its youth today and tomorrow.”

Another touching message comes from Marie-Rosalie Baud and Marie-Joachim Thuong, Sisters of Charity who once had a certain Saysamone Amphonesinh as a pupil: “You have really done good work!” they write. “Well done, dear former pupil of Sainte-Jeanne-Antide School in Pakse! You honour us, God bless you!”

As for Philippe Drillien, President of the International Association of Laotian Stamp Collectors, he shows himself to be extremely touched by Saysamone Amphonesinh’s tribute to his adopted homeland and deems him worthy of the highest honours: “Thank you for your expression of gratitude towards our country. France welcomed you; it was her duty. You have given her a spectacular thank you. If I were a minister, I would have your name put on the honours list.”

Finally, we ought to quote a prestigious tribute, that of His Excellency Abdou Diouf, former President of the Republic of Senegal, Secretary General of the Organisation international de la francophonie and Honorary President of the Permanent Forum of Arab-African Dialogue on Democracy and Human Rights. His past and present functions afford him a unique vantage point to appreciate Saysamone Amphonesinh’s work: “I congratulate you on your efforts to promote the French language, particularly in Southeast Asia, where the supply of francophone literature is indeed sometimes lacking.”

Abounding Inspiration

If you did not know Saysamone Amphonesinh, you could be forgiven for thinking that the success that greeted the first two volumes of Couleur Mékong might have prompted him to rest on his laurels and given him the feeling that he had done his duty; however, the urge to write will not go away and the Muses have remained faithful to him, as his most recent collection, Couleur Mékong volume 3, shows. The poet has not let his pen dry out in the ink well, and he has broadened his field of inspiration, allowing himself some ambitious pieces that are by turns sensual, humorous (both elements are sometimes brought together in the same song), and even “political”.

Even though he denies having any kind of political or social agenda, Saysamone Amphonesinh is however a poet who is fully aware of the realities of his time. The spectacle of the world often inspires in him a bitter irony—his “The Fire of the Tango-Flamenco” is a perfect example of this—, or sometimes even revolt—in this regard, “On Tahrir Square” can be considered as a faithful expression of the tragic events that accompanied the Egyptian revolution last year.

Sometimes melancholic, more often than not a bon vivant, often outraged, but quite the epicurean before the Eternal, a lover of words, music, flowers and women, Saysamone Amphonesinh plays with brio in every emotional key. Just as there are all-round athletes, he is an all-round poet!

  Lost My Mind
L'Amitié
Un soir d’un Noël sans toit, ni toi
Il suffit d'un regard
La mer m'a tout pris
La Peau de mes amours
Ton nom
Poète, Poème Lao
Avec le temps
Au-delà du Mékong
Des larmes de joie
Couleur safran des bonzes
Autant en emporte la mer
Mes symphonies sur terre
De nos jours
